Apple working on an ultra-portable MacBook?

If you’ve got a secret you want to keep, don’t let the US patent office know about it.  Thanks to drawings being posted online, it’s fairly easy to figure out what is coming next in the pipeline for your favorite companies.  As is the case with this apparent new design for a notebook from Apple.

Everyone keeps asking for an “ultra-portable” notebook computer from Apple.  I think they already have one with the MacBook, but apparently some folks want something even smaller than the diminuitive 13.3″ baby notebook of the Apple line.  Personally, I prefer my mondo-huge, silvery sleek 17″ MacBook Pro, but I digress.

The point of this drawing is the optical drive (for CDs and DVDs) being placed on the bottom of the notebook.  On the bottom?  I’ve seen Apple come up with a lot of slick ideas (see: iPhone) but this one is about as slick as sandpaper.  I don’t think anyone will want to have to flip their notebook computer over any time they want to pop in a new disc.  Seems like a pain in the butt to me.

Hopefully this idea will not come to fruition and will go the way of the Newton.

Transformers - More than meets the Shoe

OK, so we’ve seen the Transformer iPod docks that are due out in June or July, but this is a little too far over the edge, even for a Transformers fanboy like me. They’re shoes.

Yes, shoes that transform into mighty robots, ready to vanquish any foe and fight foot fungus.  Too bad you can’t wear the things.  They’re about one-half the size of a standard Nike, so I guess you could cram one of your kids’ feet into them, although I’m sure that most small ones today would not appreciate the coolness and awe-inspiring majesty that one would feel by having a Transformer strapped to their feet.

I’d be unstoppable.  Whenever some kid wanted to pick on me and try to take my iPod…yep, just have the shoes transform.  If that didn’t scare the crap out of somebody, nothing would.

You can pick up your pair of these ultra cool shoes for $59. They’ll be available in May, but you can pre-order now.  Ah, the marketing buzz for the Transformers movie is already starting to build.  Thank goodness, I was beginning to get worried.

Can I buy my 802.11n router now?

I’ve been biding my time, waiting for the 802.11n standard to finally be approved so I can purchase a new router for my network.  But now that I’ve ordered my Apple TV and plan on streaming TV shows and movies to my HDTV, my patience is wearing thin.

For those of you that don’t know how the process of getting a wireless standard approved, here’s a brief overview.  The standard is approved by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), a large professional organization with members all over the world. They are presented with several draft proposals that must be approved by the membership at large.

Draft 1.0 of the 802.11n standard was released last year and met with tons of disapproval from members.  But Draft 2.0 will be sent for voting at the end of this month and is expected to meet with approval.  Thank goodness, because now the fun can really begin.

802.11n is not scheduled to be ratified until October of 2008.  That’s way too far off for me.  I can’t wait anymore. I’ve been hesitant about buying one of the "Draft N" products on the market since I didn’t know if they would be compatible with the final standard.

But it seems as if I can go ahead and buy now with confidence.  The Draft 2.0 proposal includes support for existing equipment so now I can buy a new router.  I just might not have the full speed (120-200 Mbps) that the final 802.11n will afford.  Oh, well.  Just as long as I’m streaming without any hiccups, that’s all I’m concerned about.

New Version of Windows OneCare set to release with Vista

Microsoft will release a new version of the Windows Live OneCare security suite on January 30th, right alongside the release of their most secure operating system to date, Windows Vista.  Up to this point, OneCare has only been available for use to consumers in the US running Windows XP SP2 will now be available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on Jan. 30.

I’ve heard good things about the OneCare product especially if you are still choosing to use Internet Explorer as your web browser.  OneCare offers live protection for IE and the update will also offer anti-phishing protection for IE.  Other features include unified anti-virus and anti-spyware filtering, increased backup options and better support for Windows Vista.

Ryan Hamlin, general manager of Microsoft’s technology care and safety group, says

Not only does the service provide real-time anti-virus protection and manage firewall policies to address new and evolving threats, but it also goes beyond security to help simplify important maintenance tasks such as backing up photos, music and other files to a variety of storage devices and defragmenting the hard drive to help increase the performance of consumers’ PCs.

If you’re already a OneCare subscriber (which will run you about $50 for a year, comparable to other security software) you’ll ge the update automatically when the software is released.  And if you were lucky enough to be a beta tester, you will be able to purchase OneCare for a substantial discount.

Transformer iPod Docks

Do I really need to expound upon this anymore?  I mean, what more ultimate geek iPod dock could there be?  These iPod docks will be available in June (I’m sure the company is hoping to capitalize on the forthcoming release of the new Transformers movie) and will apparently come in the form of either Optimus Prime of Soundwave.

Now if I can just get my iPod to transform into an iPhone everything will be right with the world.

CompUSA offers Money Back Guarantee if you don’t like Vista

For those of you that may be a little hesitant about upgrading to Vista on or after the 30th of January, take heart.  The friendly (and opportunistic) folks at CompUSA have the solution that may work great for you.  CompUSA announced their “Windows Vista Experience Guarantee” to give customers a great Windows Vista experience or give them their money back.

Just bring in your computer to any CompUSA store before January 29th at 3 PM and you’ll get a free Vista evaluation of their computer.  Or you can do the same thing on your own with Microsoft’s Vista Upgrade Advisor. Completely up to you, but it might be nice to have someone else tell you that there’s no way you can run Vista on that old clunker PC of yours.

After you’ve had the evaluation you can purchase the software installation at a reduced price.  If you’re not totally satisfied with Vista, you’ll get your money back and your old OS back.  Seems like a great deal.

Unless you’re CompUSA and this thing (Vista) falls flat on it’s face at launch.  What happens if the majority of the people who get Vista can’t stand it?  What if they just can’t do without the “My” in “My Pictures”?

Time will only tell, but this is either a great move by CompUSA or one of the dumbest things any retailer has ever done.  I’m not sure I’d bet my companies sales on someone else’s untried and untested brand-new product.  Disaster could strike.

SanDisk goes after the Shuffle with the new Sansa Express

Get ready for the war of the itty bitty teeny weeny mp3 players.  The new Sansa Express is a bright, fresh contender in the miniature mp3 player market.  The Express comes with 1GB of internal storage with a direct USB connector, no longer a feature with the diminuitive 2G iPod Shuffle.  The Express also comes with a built-in FM tuner, voice recorder and a quad-line OLED display.

But here’s what I think is really the biggest feature of this player: the microSD card slot.  Yep, you’re not restricted to the 1GB of internal memory.  If you’ve got more songs that you love, just pick up a microSD card.  Flash memory is getting cheaper by the day so if you want to add another gig or so to your little mp3 player you should be able to do so fairly cheaply.  And with the lifespan of these flash-based mp3 players being fairly long (no hard drive to worry about) you might be able to afford 2, 4, or 8GB cards when they are released.

And at $59.99 when it is release, the Sansa Express could be a real contender against the Shuffle.  I love the iPod and all the many different versions therein, but I also love to see competition.  I think SanDisk may have a winner here.

Universal and Sony Music are saying “no” to some Zune sharing

I’ve always been a fan of the Zune.  I know, I’m one of the few, but I see a lot of potential in this little device if Microsoft can ever get their heads wrapped around the idea of what people really want in a portable audio player (i.e. podcasting support and real wi-fi functionality).  The device itself works great and is in some ways better than an iPod (yes, I uttered those words and no, I’m not on Microsoft’s payroll).  And since we have to wait until June to get a semi-kinda-sorta widescreen iPod (or iPhone or whatever), the videos on the Zune still look better than that on an iPod.

What has bothered me from the start with the Zune is the amount of blasted DRM involved with the player.  You have to buy from the Zune marketplace (even if you’ve already purchased songs from Yahoo!, Wal-Mart, Rhapsody or others), you can share songs but only with the silly "3 days or 3 plays" nonsense, and if you have a song on your player that you created and want to send it to a friend, the Zune wraps a nice layer of DRM on that one for you, too.  Not to mention the fact that Universal already gets a cut from every Zune purchase made to cover the cost of pirated music.  Way too many complications going on with the music, guys.

Then I see this article over at Engadget (via ClicZune) noting that now Sony (this bunch will just never learn, I’m thinking about starting a personal boycott of all Sony products.  Well, maybe not Spider-Man 3…) and Universal are blocking the sharing of certain artists on the Zune.  What the heck is this?  First off, we have to buy the songs from a certain store that franky, sucks, one big music company is already seeing a share of sales from all of us Joe Consumers, and now we can’t share some of the songs that we have even if the sharing stinks like last week’s garbage?

When will it end?  What is it going to take for these companies to finally stop punishing the general consumer population by just assuming that all of us are pirating content?  I understand the position that individuals and companies have a right to protect their property.  I understand that for many musicians the majority of their income is from the sales of their CDs and/or songs through a digital medium.  And I’m not saying that these wonderfully creative people are not entitled to make every shred of money that they can from their work, but at some point they have been more than compensated for that work.

Why should I have to pay someone several different times for the same content?  You buy a CD in the store, then have to buy a digital version to put on your MP3 player, then you can’t let your friends listen to the coolest song you’ve ever heard because the record company wants them to buy a copy of said song even though your new Zune is supposed to let you share songs safely without encroaching upon anyone’s income.

It stinks.  I don’t mind DRM when it is transparent.  I buy songs, movies, and TV shows all the time from the iTunes store.  And that content plays on my computer, my iPod, a friend’s computer if I so choose, and soon will be streaming to my TV with the help of my Apple TV.  It’s still copy-protected like crazy, but it doesn’t interfere in my enjoyment of the content.

Get a clue, big media.  Times are changing.  If you guys don’t start listening to the consumers, we’ll just make our own content and forget about you guys.  That’s the power of the web and it’s the power that Joe Consumer now has in the palm of his hand.

Custom Dell Laptops for all you WoW fanatics - bid at eBay

WOW Michael Dell hinted at these little beauties at his CES keynote speech and they have officially arrived.  There are only two of these machines in existence so dig deep into your pockets.  Dell has taken an aggressive move towards dominating the gaming PC market after acquiring Alienware last year, so it’s of no surprise to me that they’ve taken this oppotunity to raise a little money for charity (America’s Second Harvest will get 100% of the profits) and raise a little buzz for themselves in the gamer community.

As I’m looking at eBay right now, the current bid is sitting at $4,250.00.  That’s not for both of them, gang.  That’s just one.  With 5 days left in the bidding I can’t imagine where these things will end up.  Each computer is airbrushed by artist Mike Lavalle with a re-creation of some original composition imagery for the new Burning Crusade expansion pack for WoW.  And you get Michael Dell’s signature as well as Blizzard Entertainment (the company responsible for the juggernaut that is World of Warcraft) VP of gaming Rob Pardo’s signature.

Most of you are now going all  bug-eyed over the airbrush work but I’m sure that maybe one or two of you are interested in what’s under the hood of these laptops.  Here you go.

  • Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 running at 2.33 GHz
  • 2GB DDR2-667 memory
  • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX
  • 100GB 7200 RPM hard drive
  • DVD+/-RW
  • Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
  • Windows XP Professional
  • 17" screen

I’m sure that Dell is going to raise a pretty good chunk of change for America’s Second Harvest and I think that is great.  I always like to take advantage of a large group of socially-inept 30-something men who still live at home and have large credit card limits.  Great work, team Dell.  You are the spirit of America.

Head on over to eBay and get your bid in now.  And good luck!

I’m back!

Well, this has certainly been a journey.  I started this website just about a year ago with a baby of an idea and a podcast.  The podcast has moved on to it’s own site at TechCast Weekly.  I hope that some of you may have found this site by listening to the show or by following some random links around to get here.

I’ve been ignoring this site for the last few months and have decided to start blogging here on a permanent basis.  Fans of the TechCast are welcome, but I’m finally going to get the chance to go full out geek over here, so just holler if I leave you in the dust.

For other fans of technology, this is the place that you want to be.  Let me make one thing abundantly clear right now, I am not an IT professional.  At least not yet.  I am working on my degree (working, plodding, pondering, moving ever forward at a snail’s pace) in IT, but I just love tech and gadgets.  Anything with a chip in it.  I love it.  Computers, games, game consoles, TVs, DVDs, HD DVDs, and the list goes on and on.

Now I’m going to get the chance to blabber on and on about everything that  I love and hopefully you’ll find what I have to say interesting (at least my bank account hopes you find what I say interesting, gotta get out of working retail, stinky poo!).

So hop on and enjoy the ride.  I’ll be posting here fairly regularly so go ahead and subscribe to the feed in your favorite reader.  And if you like this site, hold on to your seats.  I’ve got a few others you might want to check out.

  • For the Mac folks, read about my adventures and learnings as I continue the switch to Mac on The Mac Noob.
  • If you’re a HDTV fiend and can’t wait to buy a new TV or watch some great HD programming, head over to The HD Experience and get some tips, reviews and comparisons on the best HD products.
  • And if you just want to learn more about how to use your computer and learn some cool stuff about computing, check out my podcast, the TechCast Weekly.
  • And although I’m still in the launch process, you’ll be able to see all my sites come together in glorious geek splendor and learn how you can become a blogger or a podcaster (and get some help along the way) over at the mothership site for all of 42 Media, providing the answers for all your ultimate new media and technology questions.

OK, I’m done blabbing for now.  But stay tuned, there’s more to come!
