It’s time for Podcasting to grow up

It’s time for one of those opinionated posts, so hold on for your life.

Paul Colligan had some interesting things to say over at his blog all about profitable podcasting.  Paul brought up some great points about podcasting that I’m sure have caused many podcasters to either reevaluate their mission in podcasting or give up altogether.  And I’ve got to be honest with you, there’s a few folks out there that need to call it quits.  Nobody really wants to listen to someone blather on about how much their life stinks and how bad they have it.  We have to hear that every day when we go to work.  Give us a break.

Now, I make it no secret that I’m in the podcasting business because I’m trying to build a business.  I’m sick and tired of punching a clock, working for someone else and having to live up to their pathetic expectations of how a business is supposed to be run.  But that’s just me.

I realize and understand that there are many folks in podcasting land that are in this just for the sheer fun of it, and that’s great.  Don’t let me be the one to stomp all over your passion.  That’s fantastic.  Just please don’t stomp all over mine.

I just think that it’s time that podcasters stop thinking about their shows as a hobby and move towards a business mindset.  Again, that’s just my thinking.  We are still very early on in the beginnings of this incredible new media and we have a lot of growing to do.  But it’s the podcasters that are going to have to foster that growth.

And we can’t grow right now.  There are two clearly defined camps in podcasting.  Those that want to make it a business, and those that want to make it a hobby.  Both have their pros and cons.  But instead of focusing on growing them, we’re too busy bashing each other in the heads with comments on blogs and jabs at conferences.  And as I’m saying this, I’m admitting that I have been guilty of some of that myself.

We podcasters are lord and master of our own destiny.  We are the ones that are going to determine whether or not this new media will survive.  And it seems as though we are hitting on some rocky times right now.  I think that’s what you call "growing pains".

The opportunity for podcasting is tremendous, but only if we take advantage of it.  And we can’t take advantage of it when we squabble about every little thing, from ad rates to which microphone to use to the best ways to record a phone interview.

We’ve got to work together in podcasting.  Let those that want to be professional, be professional.  Those that want to be hobbyists, be hobbyists.  Both sides are viable and can co-exist.  We just have to be willing to allow that.
