EMI to start selling DRM free music - in AAC format
Yes, I know that the online music world is up in arms right now with the EMI-Apple announcement from earlier today. I’ll spare you the details, but here’s the overall picture: Apple will begin selling DRM-free music from the EMI library in May. Although you’ll pay an extra $0.30 for these songs, you’ll be getting a couple of benefits.
Benefit #1
Your songs will now be delivered in AAC format. And not just AAC, but a high-quality 256kbps AAC. Bigger files, but better sound quality for all of you audiophiles out there.
Benefit #2
Your songs will come completely free of any DRM. No more burning songs to a CD to move them to another computer. Now you can buy songs from iTunes and use on any audio player on the market (at least all the ones that I know about). This is where things get interesting.
Follow me here, because Apple has just created the perfect situation for their products.
You have a Zune or a Creative mp3 player. Great products, but until now you were unable to easily purchase songs from iTunes and play on these devices. Now, you can buy songs in iTunes. Suddenly, you begin to see all of the other fantastic content available in the iTunes store. Movies, TV shows, podcasts.
Your interest is piqued.
You a movie, maybe even a season pass to Battlestar Galactica. Then you realize, "Hey, Apple makes something that I can use to watch this stuff on my TV, don’t they?"
They most certainly do.
So you order your Apple TV. And maybe somewhere down along the line you realize the error of your ways and pick up an iPod, just for kicks.
You are overwhelmed with the gorgeous interface of Apple TV, and floored by it’s ease of use. Your iPod only reinforces these feelings.
Suddenly, you’re at the Apple Store, drooling over the final piece of your Apple puzzle. It’s time for the ultimate PC upgrade.
Credit card in hand, you’re buying your first iMac or Mac Mini. Or perhaps temptation has overwhelmed you and you’re dishing out the big money for a Mac Pro.
All this because of $1.29 song. Brilliant, simply brilliant.
