128GB 2.5-inch Solid State Disc - how long before there’s one in your iPod or Laptop

OK, so one big problem that faces notebook computer users is battery life.  One of the two biggest drains on that battery life is that wonderful thing that holds all the information on your computer, that spinning hard drive.  The other is the screen itself.  While you can adjust settings on both of these items, whenever you access any data on your drive of any type, the hard drive has to spin up, using more battery power.

Hard drives are great and have become very large, even in notebook computers, coming in standard sizes of around 80-100GB in any computer. However, hard drives were never really meant to be something portable since they require quite a bit of power to run.

128GB SSD In steps solid-state storage.  Solid state storage has no moving parts.  Hence, less power consumption.  You’ve probably got a solid state storage device around you somewhere, maybe you even have one hanging around your neck.  All the USB thumb drives (flash drives, jump drives, pen drives, whatever you want to call them) are examples of solid state storage.  As are the little memory cards you use in your digital camera or PDA.

This storage is great.  Very resilient, low power consumption, and very lightweight.  But at this point, still much more expensive than traditional hard drives.  And only available in sizes up to around 8GB.

Today I see this wonderful bit of news.  A-Data has created a 128GB, 2.5-inch SATA solid state drive.  128GB in something a little smaller than a playing card.

What kind of battery life could you get on your notebook computer with a solid-state drive rather than a regular hard drive?  8 hours?  12 hours?  And that might be on a 17" notebook computer.  Think about the kind of battery life you might achieve on a notebook with a 12" or 13" screen.

I’m extremely excited about what this means for the future of portable computing.  Pricing and release date details have not been released yet, but I’m sure we can’t be far away from seeing these in a store near you.

Think about how many movies I could put on a 128GB iPod…and how many I could actually watch…
