Apple working on an ultra-portable MacBook?

If you’ve got a secret you want to keep, don’t let the US patent office know about it.  Thanks to drawings being posted online, it’s fairly easy to figure out what is coming next in the pipeline for your favorite companies.  As is the case with this apparent new design for a notebook from Apple.

Everyone keeps asking for an “ultra-portable” notebook computer from Apple.  I think they already have one with the MacBook, but apparently some folks want something even smaller than the diminuitive 13.3″ baby notebook of the Apple line.  Personally, I prefer my mondo-huge, silvery sleek 17″ MacBook Pro, but I digress.

The point of this drawing is the optical drive (for CDs and DVDs) being placed on the bottom of the notebook.  On the bottom?  I’ve seen Apple come up with a lot of slick ideas (see: iPhone) but this one is about as slick as sandpaper.  I don’t think anyone will want to have to flip their notebook computer over any time they want to pop in a new disc.  Seems like a pain in the butt to me.

Hopefully this idea will not come to fruition and will go the way of the Newton.
